The park down by the river was empty save for a couple of children on the swings.

“You throw like a girl!”

“Sorry,” said Az. “I think you broke my finger with that last one.”

“Wuss. You should see my fastball.”

“That wasn’t your fastball? Who the hell taught you to throw like that?”

“My grandpa,” she said, catching Az’s next throw. “Apparently your grandma taught you. Here’s a nice easy one.”

“Hey! Maybe she did, and I’m all choked up and traumatized by it.”

“I’d be traumatized too if I threw like you. If you need to cry it out, I’m here.”

Hanna was back to normal.

“My grandpa was a pro, you know,” she said, adjusting her grip on the ball, “Relief pitcher for the Vancouver Asahi until 1941.”

“Vancouver…Asahi? Like the beer? You made that up. OW!”

“That’s my fastball.”

Az shook his hand, hoping the pain would somehow fall out.

“Hanna, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

He lobbed the ball underhand to her. “Where the hell did you get that squid?”

Hanna almost dropped the ball. “What?”

“I’ve raided your fridge tons of times. The only seafood you have is breaded fish sticks. So where did you get that squid you threw at my window?”

“Why are you asking me that?”

“Because I need time for my bones to knit, why do you think?”

She grinned. “I got it from Pete. I only had one egg in my fridge, and his wife cooks weird stuff like that all the time. You’d never guess she’s from Dublin.”

“So you just knocked on his door and yelled, ‘Give me a fucking squid, Pete!?’”

“Something like that. I don’t know if I swore.”

“You probably did.”

“Yeah, I probably did.”

“Tell you what, why don’t you show me how your game works. Explain how you plan to turn it into a business.”

“Don’t try to play suck-up to me, Az.”

“I’m not! It’s either that or pachinko, and if I keep playing that I’ll end up with lung cancer. Besides, like you said, we already play computer games all the time. I’m sure it will be fun.”

A bit of the child on Christmas morning returned to her eyes. “Okay.”
